Maiko Geisha Design
The handle of this gorgeous powder brush features one of Japan’s most iconic cultural symbols: a Maiko (trainee geisha) applied using traditional makie technique. Maiko are distinguishable from geisha by their elaborate, eye-fetching kimonos of bright colors, okobo (platform wooden sandals), their natural hair worn decorated with ornate kanzashi (hairpins) and red and pink-hued makeup around their eyes and eyebrows, and pink blush. In contrast, geisha typically wear more subdued kimonos, undecorated black wigs, flat sandals and simpler makeup. Maiko training is about five years, during which time they learn the art of traditional dance, music, tea ceremony and tatami room etiquette.
